Tarapoto lies at 356 m above sealevel at the very edge of the eastern
foothills of the Andes. It is the largest city in the department of San
Martín, and an important agricultural centre. Tarapoto is
situated in the Rio Mayo valley, not far from the point where the Rio
Mayo enters the Rio Huallaga. It is located in a beautiful region,
surrounded by dense tropical rainforest. Nearby are Moyobamba and Rioja. It is also connected to Yurimaguas, further down into the Amazon basin.
