La Oroya is an industrial town high in the mountains east of Lima. It is the metallurgical capital of
Peru with iron ore in the surroundings and large metal smelters around
the city. Therefore it is not an attractive city for tourists, but it
is an important crossing of roads and many travellers stop here for the
night. The railroad from Lima to Huancayo,
the highest in the world, also crosses La Oroya.
La Oroya lies at an altitude of 3731 m. You can guess the climate can
be very cold, especially at night. However, during a sunny day the
temperature is pleasant. La Oroya has a population of about 35,000.
