Junín is a small city high on the cold altiplano, the
high plains of the Andes. It lies at 4107 m above sealevel and is the
capital of the department with the same name. The city itself has not
much to offer for travellers, but outside the town lies the Lago
Junín, the second largest lake in Peru (Lago Titicaca is the
largest). The lake is an important refuge for birds, and part of it is
reserved as a National Park. Junín is connected with Cerro de
Pasco and Huánuco in the
north and La Oroya in the south.
