Huánuco
Situated in the transition zone between the Andes and the high rain
forest, Huánuco lies on the banks
of the river Pillco, which joins the Huallaga river several kilometers
downstream. Huánuco lies in a wide valley encircled by mountains
and is the capital of the district with the same name. It is close to
Cerro
de Pasco and Junín, both on the
cold
altiplano, and Tingo María,
in the high jungle. Huánuco, population 118.000, is situated at
a
comfortable altitude of 1849 m, which makes it a very pleasant town in
a
subtropical climate. Below are pictures of a dance festival which took
place
at the Plaza de Armas. The city is the scene of one of the most
colourful
dances in Peruvian folklore, la danza de los negritos, which takes
place
every January. The pictures were taken during another festival in
October
2000.
