Above is a picture of the Parque Principal in Chiclayo. This is the
main plaza of the city. Unlike most Peruvian cities it is not called
Plaza de Armas, since Chiclayo was not founded by the Spanish.
The white colour on
the plaza is not snow, but is probably caused by the long exposure of
the picture. There will never be snow in this tropical northcoast city.
Chiclayo is one of Peru's fast-growing
modern cities. It is an important commercial centre and the capital of
the coastal desert department of Lambayeque. With a population of over
400,000, it is the fourth largest city in Peru.
In 1987 there was dramatic news of the discovery of a royal pre-Inca
tomb of the Moche, in Sipán, about 30 km Southeast of Chiclayo.
This find has been called the most important archaeological discovery
in
Peru in the last 50 years.
