Situated on the eastern slopes of
the Andes, Chachapoyas is the capital of the department of Amazonas. Chacha,
as it is called by its 16,000 inhabitants, is located at 2334m on top
of
a hill, surrounded by eucalyptus forests and imposing mountains. In its
soul it is a typical Andean city, even though it lies within the cloudforest, one of the habitats
richest in species in Peru. For many travellers Chachapoyas is the
starting point for exploring both the natural and archeological
environment, especially
the pre-Inca site Kuélap.
