In the1980's Ayacucho was the violent headquarter of Sendero Luminoso,
but now it is a peaceful city with a temperate, sunny climate. It is
situated in the Sierra at 2731 m above sea
level, and has about 100,000 inhabitants. It is an old city with 33
churches. They say there is a church on every street corner!

Ayacucho is the capital of the department with the same name and is
situated in Peru's central Andes. The city has a lot to offer but lies
somewhat remote. For that reason it is still pretty unknown.
